"Having beaten them the last two years, we knew this game would be tight," said head coach Tom Stone. "They are an excellent squad, but we had hoped for more on the counter and that did not materialize. I said earlier in the week that these games tend to be won by a special effort. Last year it was Kirsten Davis for us, this year it was [Olyvia] Dowell for them."
Though it was not sustained, the Tech counter-attack looked like it would be problematic for Oklahoma State early. Tech rattled off two shots in the opening minutes, then scored on the third. The goal came off the right foot of Macy Schultz, who was left wide open to charge the 18-yard box from midfield. Still unmarked as she approached the top of the box, the sophomore unloaded from 25 yards, slotting it into the bottom right corner of the net. It was her first of the season.
"I've been working at dribbling at full pace and shooting it," Schultz. "Coach told us in the pregame scout that this keeper could be beat at long distance, so I took the chance and it went in."

Down a goal, the Cowgirls launched a relentless effort to equalize. Cassie Hiatt's back line was steadfast, but the hosts hit the back of the net after a punch from Tech keeper Madison White bounced around inside the box and knocked in. White wound up on the ground, and Jen Rose was removed from the game after being injured in the fray.
"The equalizer at the end of the half was problematic," said Stone. "But we regrouped at halftime and fought all the way to overtime."
It was in overtime Dowell would clinch the three points. Tech launched an early attack, but the Cowgirls held the lion's share of possession before converting the winner.
"I felt like OSU was just allowed too much of the ball in overtime," Stone said. "They built momentum and had dangerous service. In the end it was a great run by a special player who has now won two games in similar fashion for them."
But there were positives to take from Friday night. Schultz's first goal of the year was exciting, but the most encouraging moment came in the 71st minute when Jade King made her first appearance since 2019. The redshirt senior, who tore her ACL last September, checked in and played for 19 minutes.
"It feels so good to be back with my team," said King. "They have helped me with this process a lot and helped me stay confident. They supported my journey through the injury and rehab. It felt so good to be back out with them."

Despite taking the loss, Madison White was tremendous in the contest. The sophomore faced 28 shots, saving 10 of the 12 the Cowgirls put on goal. She forced overtime in the 90th minute with an incredible leaping stop.

Texas Tech will return home to host rival Texas on Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. The game, which has already sold out, will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
