Maryland men’s basketball will take on Virginia Tech in the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge in College Park on Dec. 1.

For the last 23 years, the ACC and Big Ten conferences have participated in a challenge where the 14 teams in each conference match up with one team from the opposing conference.

Last season, the Big Ten got the best of the ACC with a 7-5 record in the challenge. However, the Terps were on the losing end of their matchup against Clemson.

This year, Maryland will look to right the ship against the Hokies at home. The Terps have won the last six contests against Virginia Tech and lead the all-time series 32-10. The last time the two teams met was in March of 2014 when Maryland was still a member of the ACC. The Terps came away with a convincing 64-47 victory.

The Hokies are coming off an impressive 15-7 season, finishing third in the ACC. They qualified for the NCAA Tournament with an at-large bid as a 10 seed but lost to Florida in the first round.

Virginia Tech is entering the 2021-22 season with high expectations as many of its key guys that propelled the team to an NCAA Tournament berth last season are returning. On top of the returners, head coach Mike Young has added some worthy transfers to bolster an already strong lineup.

The Maryland-Virginia Tech matchup may not be the headline of the challenge, but it should be a good one between two teams projected towards the top of their respective conference.

Maryland’s nonconference schedule is beginning to take shape. The Terps are scheduled to face Vermont, George Washington, Quinnipiac and Florida in their nonconference slate. They will also participate in a tournament in the Bahamas featuring Louisville, Mississippi State and Richmond.
