Cambridge started 35 of 36 games for Arizona State last season, helping lead the Sun Devils to the second round of the NCAA Tournament by scoring 15 points in their opening round matchup against Nevada. He was second on the team with 28 blocked shots and also provided 30 assists and 22 steals. Cambridge was 4-for-6 from the field and 5-of-6 at the free-throw line in his 15-point performance to begin the NCAA Tournament and would finish the year scoring in double figures 16 times with three double-doubles. He had a season-high 18 points against the Washington Huskies in a game where he played 38 minutes and established a new career-high with 11 rebounds against San Diego.
Cambridge transferred to ASU after playing in 91 games over three seasons at Auburn from 2019-22. He would average 6.0 points and 3.1 rebounds during that time, including averaging 8.9 points as a sophomore. He was second on the team with 56 offensive rebounds as a junior where he averaged 5.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. His career-high in points came on January 22, 2020, when he went off for 26 points against South Carolina. While at Auburn, he earned 2020-21 SEC Academic Honor Roll and 2019-20 First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll.
Prior to beginning his collegiate career, Cambridge played at Hillcrest Prep in Phoenix for his senior season. He was slated as a three-star prospect and the No. 8 player in Arizona after averaging 13 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game. He also played on the Nike EYBL circuit for Athletes of Tomorrow where he averaged 15.1 points and 5.1 rebounds.
Devan has six siblings, including his brother Desmond Cambridge, Jr. who also played Arizona State and recently signed to play for Toronto in the NBA Summer League. His father, Desmond Cambridge, played at Alabama A&M from 1998-2002. As a senior, Desmond established the NCAA record with 160 steals and 5.52 per game.
Cambridge is the fourth transfer to be added by McCasland from the transfer portal following Warren Washington who also transfers from ASU, Chance McMillian, and Darrion Williams. McMillian transferred from Grand Canyon where he averaged 10.2 points per game last season, while Williams earned Mountain West Freshman of the Year playing at Nevada where he averaged 7.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. Washington is coming off a season at Arizona State where he earned Pac-12 All-Defensive Team honors and averaged 9.2 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game.
