Shares of technology companies fell as a disappointing earnings report from Apple offset a strong update from Amazon.com.

Amazon soared after the online megastore posted surprisingly strong sales growth, with shares advancing almost 10% for one of its biggest gains in recent years.

Apple shares slid after its sales declined for the third straight quarter. Mega cap tech stocks have risen sharply so far this year, stirring concerns about whether growth rates for mature companies such as Apple justify lofty valuations.

Nikola Chief Executive Michael Lohscheller, an auto industry veteran, stepped down due to a family health matter, and Nikola Chairman Steve Girsky took over as head of the electric-vehicle maker.

A federal judge narrowed a major antitrust case against Alphabet's Google ahead of a trial that is slated to begin next month, rejecting an argument made by a bipartisan group of 38 state attorneys general who sued Google over its alleged monopoly in Internet search.

Companies associated with "superconductors" briefly surged in value in recent weeks after scientists in South Korea claimed to have engineered a breakthrough in the search for an alloy that would conduct electricity at room temperature.
