Instant observations:How Notre Dame women's basketball was able to hold off Louisville

The Hokies will be without three-time ACC Player of the Year Elizabeth Kitley

Tech coach Kenny Brooks said Friday that the grad center will not play at all in the league tourney after suffering a knee injury in the third quarter of the Hokies’ 80-75 loss Sunday at Virginia to close the regular season.

He did not rule her out of the NCAA Tournament, however.

The 6-6 Kitley averaged 22.8 points (second in the ACC), 11.4 rebounds (first) and 2.1 blocks (first) during the regular season.

The timing of her absence is remindful of the Irish losing their top player a year ago, Olivia Miles, to a season-ending knee injury. Both were second-team All-Americans last winter, too.

Like Kitley, Miles was injured in a regular-season finale, and like Tech this season, ND was the regular-season league champ a year ago. The Irish went on to win their quarterfinal last March, but fell to Louisville in the semifinals.

Led by senior Amoore and freshman center Strack effectively filling in, the Hokies advanced with a 55-47 win over Miami

Georgia Amoore poured in 23 of her game-high 27 points in the second half, accounting for all but seven of Tech’s 30 overall. The crafty Australian finished 10-of-12 at the line.

The 6-5 Clara Strack, bearing some resemblance to Kitley in both style and appearance, added 10 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots in 27 minutes off the bench. Her averages in those respective categories going into the day were 3.2, 3.7, 1.1 and 11.6.

On the season, Amoore’s averaging 19.0 points and an ACC-leading 7.1 assists, while junior guard Matilda Ekh is at 10.1 points. The two have combined to drain 148-of-407 on 3-pointers for 36.4%.

The Hokies and Irish will meet for the second time in 10 days.

ND posted an authoritative 71-58 home win over Tech in that last matchup, albeit with the Irish in scramble mode trying to achieve a top-four ACC Tourney seed and with the Hokies having already clinched the No. 1 slot.

Amoore scored 20 points. Kitley added 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Ekh netted 12 points as well.

For the Irish, Hannah Hidalgo had 23 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and three steals. Sonia Citron added 21 points, and Maddy Westbeld 19 points and 10 rebounds.

On Friday, ND picked up its sixth straight victory and third in a row over a ranked opponent by way of its 77-68 quarterfinal win over No. 24 Louisville.

“Notre Dame,” Brooks said after Tech added its win, “is playing as well as anyone in the country right now.”
