Tech nearly edges Miami with Smith's double-double - VT hokiesports.com

techsooper.blogspot.com CHESTNUT HILL - Back on the road, the Virginia Tech volleyball team could not get it done against Miami as it fell 3-1 on Saturday afternoon inside Power Gym.

Tech moves to 6-8 on the season and 5-8 in the conference. The Hurricanes improve to 10-6 on the season and 8-6 in ACC play. Miami bounces back from its 3-1 loss to Boston College on Friday and defeats Tech for the eighth straight time. Tech's last victory over the Hurricanes came in 2013 and it was a 3-1 win in Blacksburg.

The Hurricanes found their advantage on the offensive end as they had three reach double figures in kills including outside hitters Angela Grieve (19 kills), Elizaveta Lukianova (18), Janet Kalaniuvalu (15). Setter Savannah Vach & sophomore Amanda Falck combined for 53 assists as Vach dished out 30 and Falck tallied 23.

On the defensive end, Miami scooped up 72 digs compared to the Hokies' 59. Junior Priscilla Hernandez collected 21 digs and Grieve had a near double-double as she added eight digs along with her 19 kills. Miami also racked up four solo blocks to add to their defensive edge.

Despite the loss, outside hitter Kaity Smith notched the 30th double-double of her career with 15 kills and 10 digs on the day. Outside hitters Marisa Cerchio and Ashley Homan each added 10 kills. Setter Brie Postema continued to be consistent as she dished out 24 assists.

MATCH NOTES

Outside hitter Smith now has eight double-doubles on the season.

Senior Kylie Thomas notched her career high in digs with 18 on the day.

Outside hitter Cerchio has now reached double figures in kills in consecutive matches. Cerchio sits at 127 on the season.

Setter Brie Postema now has 108 assists over her last four outings.
