RPI unveils high-tech IBM Quantum System One - WRGB

TROY, NY (WRGB) — A local university unveiled a new high-tech addition to their campus Friday, becoming the first university in the world able to do so. School officials say the unique device will put them at the forefront of being able to improve the lives of those across the capital region and the world – for many years to come.

It was a historic reveal taking place on Rensselaer’s Polytechnic Institute’s campus. Solidifying their status as an institution for cutting edge technology and research.

“This investment not only is a strong development for the Capital Region and New York state, but for the world,” said Congressman Paul Tonko.

RPI is the first university in the world to now house the IBM Quantum System One. Crowds gathering to catch a glimpse of the intricate system. The high-tech device works to solve problems that are too complex for classic computers.

“And having it here on our campus is going to give us a head start to figure out what those problems are and to train people on how to use it so that when that full power of quantum computing is realized in 4, 5, 6 years, we’re going to be there ready to use it, ready to accelerate the region economically” Marty A. Schmidt, RPI President.

Dozens turning out to mark the occasion – including elected officials as well as RPI’s President, IBM’s CEO as well as students from the schools quantum computing club. Many in attendance say the new high-tech device will help students and the next generation of researcher’s better tackle and solve the worlds problems. And use the device to explore it’s applications in industries like health, artificial intelligence, national security, pharmaceuticals and more.

The Quantum System One is housed in the Voorhees Computing Center Chapel.
