Gardner-Webb Drops Series Opener Friday At No. 7 Georgia Tech - Gardner Webb University Bulldogs

techsooper.blogspot.com ATLANTA – Gardner-Webb faced its second top-10 opponent of the season on Friday afternoon, falling at 7th-ranked Georgia Tech, 14-0, in its first road game of 2022.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (2-4) will face the Yellow Jackets (5-1) in a doubleheader Saturday, with the first game starting at 1:00 pm. The three-game series was scheduled to conclude on Sunday, but that finale was moved up a day due to expected wet weather in the area.

Georgia Tech broke a scoreless tie in its half of the third, as projected first round draft pick Kevin Parada hit a solo home run for an early lead. The Yellow Jackets added three runs in the fourth inning and broke the game open with six runs in the fifth. A pair of two-run innings capped the scoring.

Gardner-Webb had only one runner reach second base before the eighth inning and loaded the bases in the ninth after an Elijah Bowers single and two walks. Georgia Tech worked out of the jam to preserve the shutout.

Joe Simeone worked 4.2 innings and allowed seven earned runs on five hits for Gardner-Webb. Simeone (0-2) struck out seven but walked six in his second-straight outing against a top-10 foe.

Gardner-Webb had four hits in the game, with Jacob Marcos (1-for-4), Bowers (1-for-1), Peter Capobianco (1-for-4) and Daegan Brady (1-for-3) collecting those safeties.

The high-powered Tech offense had 10 hits, including four home runs and two doubles, to pace its attack. Drew Compton belted his fourth long ball of the season as part of a 3-for-4 effort at the plate. He also had a double. No other Yellow Jacket had more than one hit in the game. Leadoff man Chandler Simpson hit a grand slam in the sixth to power that big inning.

Chance Huff worked 6.0 innings of one-hit baseball to pick up the win. He fanned nine batters and walked one. Camron Hill earned a 3.0 inning save, scattering three hits and working around two walks in the ninth.
