Duke Captures Series with 15-14 Victory over Georgia Tech - Duke University - GoDuke.com

techsooper.blogspot.com ATLANTA – Duke hit five home runs to outslug Georgia Tech on its way to a 15-14 win on Sunday to capture the ACC series at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta.

The Blue Devils (18-22, 8-13 ACC) recorded its first series win over Georgia Tech (25-16, 10-11 ACC) in Atlanta since 2016. Duke tallied 34 runs and hit 10 home runs in the series, both the most in an ACC series under head coach Chris Pollard. The Blue Devils' 43 hits were the most in a conference series since against Virginia in 2017.

Duke tallied 19 hits to plate the 15 runs on Sunday, including five home runs and five doubles. Every Blue Devil in the lineup recorded a hit, led by senior RJ Schreck and graduate student Wil Hoyle. Schreck went 3-for-4 with a home run, two walks and a career-high five RBIs. Hoyle finished 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs and three RBIs. It was his first multi-homer game of his career.

Senior right-hander Cooper Stinson earned the win in his first ACC start of the season, a planned staff day. Stinson was lights out through the first three innings, allowing just one hit, but Georgia Tech was able to get to him in the bottom of the fourth inning. He allowed three runs on four hits while striking out two in 3.2 innings of work.

Duke scored first for the third consecutive game, jumping out to a 7-0 lead on seven extra-base hits through the middle of the fourth. Junior Graham Pauley, sophomore Alex Stone, Hoyle and Schreck each hit a home run while junior Chad Knight added two doubles and sophomore Luke Storm hit one two-base knock. Knight finished 3-for-6 at the plate with a pair of doubles.

Georgia Tech wouldn't be counted out, scoring five runs between the fourth and fifth to cut the Duke lead to 7-5.

Each team scored five runs in the sixth inning to make it 12-10. Duke plated the quintet of runs with two outs, doing so on six singles in the inning and a hit by pitch. Schreck and senior Damon Lux each hit a two-RBI single. Rookie Devin Obee, who finished 3-for-5 with a double, recorded an RBI single in the inning.

The Yellow Jackets added another home run in the bottom of the seventh to narrow the lead to one run, 12-11.

Duke was unfazed after seeing its lead shrink to a lone run for the first time, adding a trio of runs in the top of the ninth. Obee singled before Hoyle smoked his second home run of the day over the wall in right field. With two outs, Mooney reached on an infield single before scoring from first as Pauley doubled down the right-field line.

Georgia Tech threatened in the bottom of the ninth, looking for its second walk-off win of the weekend. A sacrifice fly and two-run home run plated three as the game-tying run came up to the plate with two outs. Duke forced a fly ball to left field to seal the win, 15-14.

Sophomore southpaw Luke Fox earned his second save in as many days. Fox did his job in securing the win, limiting the Yellow Jackets' offense to three runs on one hit in two innings of work.

Duke enjoys a six-day hiatus from play for exam break, before returning to action on Sunday for a doubleheader against High Point at Jack Coombs Field.
