Two of the hottest teams in college basketball meet Friday when the No. 25-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels face the surging Virginia Tech Hokies in the 2022 ACC Tournament semifinals. The Tar Heels (24-8) have won eight of their last nine and are virtual locks for an NCAA Tournament bid regardless of their finish in the ACC Tournament. The Hokies (21-12) were widely believed to be on the proverbial bubble entering this week, but have helped their cause with two consecutive ACC Tournament victories. They beat Notre Dame 87-80 in a quarterfinal Thursday, and a win over UNC likely would cement a bid to the Big Dance. However, North Carolina swept the regular-season series.

Tipoff is set for 9:30 p.m. ET from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The Tar Heels are 2.5-point favorites and the over-under for total points scored is 139.5 in the latest Virginia Tech vs. North Carolina odds from Caesars Sportsbook. Why North Carolina can cover

The Tar Heels have peaked at the right time after they spent most of the season marked by inconsistency. For much of the season, their resume lacked quality wins and they were considered a borderline NCAA Tournament club heading into the final stretch of the regular season.

That all changed with a run that has seen seven of their past 12 victories come by double figures and a five-game unbeaten streak to end the season that saw them finish second in the ACC standings. Of course, their signature win came in a 94-81 upset of Duke last weekend in the final home game for venerable Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski.

North Carolina's recent surge is reminiscent of prolific Tar Heel clubs that excel in the open floor and have an edge in athleticism and strength over most of its opponents. The Tar Heels beat a stubborn Virginia club 63-43 on Thursday, behind a 46-32 rebounding edge and a defense that limited the Cavaliers to 34.6 percent from the field.

Why Virginia Tech can cover

The Hokies are a similarly late-blooming club that wasn't considered a viable NCAA Tournament invitee until they went on a run that has seen them win 11 of their past 13 games. The difference has been an added element of efficient offense to supplement their rugged defense, and their confidence appears to grow with each outing.

In Thursday's semifinals, Virginia Tech took advantage of what looked like a flat Notre Dame club and built a double-digit lead early on the way to an 87-80 victory. The Hokies shot 57.2 percent from the field and forced Notre Dame into 12 turnovers, while committing just six of their own.

The Hokies registered five players in double figures, led by senior forward Keve Aluma with a team-high 20 points. Fellow senior Justyn Mutts contributed 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
