#Pack9 Clinches Series Over No. 12 Georgia Tech With 6-5 Win - NC State University Athletics - NC State Athletics

techsooper.blogspot.com RALEIGH - NC State baseball (14-8, 3-4 ACC) picked up its first ACC series win of the year as it knocked off No. 12 Georgia Tech (16-8, 4-4 ACC) on Saturday night at Doak Field at Dail Park, 6-5.

Five of the Wolfpack's six runs came by way of the home run, as it extended its win streak to three and has won four of its last five games. Additionally, NC State has won six of the last seven series meetings with the Yellow Jackets.

After the opening two frames were scoreless for both clubs, the Yellow Jackets struck first in the third inning on a 2-RBI single from Colin Hall, scoring Andrew Jenkins and Kevin Parada.

The Wolfpack broke the ice in the bottom of the fourth inning when Josh Hood launched a solo home run to left field, serving as Hood's third homer in the Pack's last four games. After J.T. Jarrett reached on a fielder's choice and Will Marcy drew a full-count walk, Payton Green sent a three-run shot to right-center field to give NC State its first lead of the game at 4-2.

Georgia Tech responded quickly, however, plating two in the top of the fifth with the first coming on a single from Jenkins where he advanced to third on a fielding error allowing Tres Gonzalez to score. Jenkins was then driven home on an RBI-groundout from Hall to knot things up at 4-4. A two-on, two-out scenario later in the inning resulted in Carson Kelly relieving Wolfpack starting pitcher Matt Willadsen, with Kelly retiring the first Yellow Jacket he faced to end the inning.

Kelly proceeded to toss 2.2 impressive innings of work, striking out three and earning his first career win at NC State.

The Wolfpack answered Georgia Tech's rally in the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff home run from Noah Soles, the first of his career, putting NC State up 5-4.

The Pack added an insurance run in the seventh to increase its lead to 6-4, with Devonte Brown leading the inning off by reaching on an error, stealing second base, advancing to third on a passed ball, and then being driven home on a sacrifice fly from LuJames Groover III.

The Yellow Jackets threatened in the eighth, adding a run after a leadoff single from Tim Borden II was complemented by back-to-back hits from Jack Rubenstein and Gonzalez.

After facing the first two batters of the inning and retiring one, Kelly was relieved by Baker Nelson who finished the frame with two strikeouts to strand two Georgia Tech runners.

Chris Villaman came to the mound for the Wolfpack in the ninth, picking up his second save in as many days and allowing just one hit to clinch the first series win over the Yellow Jackets since 2018.

Kelly, Nelson and Villaman combined for the final 4.1 innings of the contest and surrendered just one earned run while fanning seven batters.

The Wolfpack will return to action on Sunday in game three of the series against Georgia Tech. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Doak Field at Dail Park and will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra alongside an audio stream on WKNC 88.1 and the Varsity Network App.
